comment: When my father decided to throw away his old Isabella I was not more than a student without money... Otherwise I would have saved this car. Now, I'm not only looking for a Isabella (Coupé) - even in a critical state - but I also have been dreaming about a possible renaissance of this noble brand. Would it really not be possible to find investors for a new Borgward-Society? What about a series of an outstanding "remake" of - let's say - the Coupé... Just about the way "Jaguar" went these years: Classical shape, but redesigned for today's eyes.
Well - dreams are always allowed, but what do other Borgward-Fans think about
such ideas?
Looking forward to any answers and with greetings from Basle (Switzerland)

comment: I was in the US Army in 1970, stationed in Kentucky. A friend from Tennessee came back from a weekend pass and he was driving an Isabella coupe. This was a pretty exotic car at that time; when everyone was driving American iron. Anyway, the next weekend he said he was broke and could I loan him twenty? I did and that was the last I heard of him. I don't know if he was just a.w.o.l. or if he deserted, but apparently he had more important things to do than be in the army. That car has stayed in my mind since then.

comment: I would love to be able to tell you something about Borgwards, but I cannot! I have been searching for one for ages but still haven't found a restorable specimen! Yesterday I got to see a coupe (!!) that is for sale; it is in a restorable state, not 100% complete (but a sedan parts car goes with it), but I feel it is too expensive (around US$7.000). What do you think?
This is a very rare model indeed nowadays in my country (Chile).
Any suggestions??
Is it possible to locate some mechanical and cosmetic parts in the USA or Europe? (Say headlight bezels, dash knobs, engine gasket sets, etc).
Your comments would be VERY welcome!

It was in driving condition when it was parked. But certainly needs some work now. I intended to restore this beauty but probably never will. The next best thing is to sell it to a good home. Could you give me some advice.

Hi Greg-
Saw your web page on the BW's and just wanted to say Hi. (You bought that old white '58 coupe from me many years ago in Los Angeles and fixed it up). I still have one coupe left, Hans Bruckner bought the other two from me. Need to get mine running again, it's been sitting for ten years, but I've begun to work on it again. Hope to hear from you

comment: I was handed down a 1958 Isabella when I was a young boy as my first car.
It was blue and had red and white seats. It had been around the clock about one and ahalf times when I got it and it went around again during the time I had it.
The stearing box bearing wore out it had been driven so much. The ring gear eventualy was so worn that it would not start with the starter motor so we used to push start it, it started first time every time with just a short bump start.
I once had an oportunity to race a toyota 1600 SR on the freeway and he could not pass me even though his car was 100cc bigger and that many years newer .
I am sorry today that the car was ever sold. I wish I could afford to get one again and restore it. I think the TS coupe is still one of the best looking cars. I have a photo of one as my desktop today.

My dad had a pair in the late '60s and I fell in love with them then. I'm also looking for any service material, (ie. manuals, literature, etc.) I've got a parts catalog from 1957, and it has some beautiful line drawings of how the car comes apart, as well as part numbers. How availlable are spares in North America, (particularly Canada)? If anyone is looking for any info that I can provide, E-mail me (with regards to the parts book) Ich spreche auch Deutsch...

(Purists stop reading now before your blood pressure goes through the roof!). Engine is a 1.8 litre twin cam fuel injected Nissan.Gearbox is all syncro 5 speed. Brakes are big discs with servo booster. Wheels are 13 inch low profiles on slightly wide spokes. Car slightly lowered but looks pretty stock. During this time I have also owned many other makes of cars but none that I have enjoyed as much as the Borgwards. I have hardly come across any one that has had a bad word for them. Anyone that has owned an Isabella regrets that they sold it many wish they still had them. Every where you go people come up & admire them & tell you abought the ones they owned or new someone that had.I hope to enjoy my Borgwards for sometime yet.I think what I like most is that they are very reliable & very nice to drive. comment: Interesting to see a page on Borgward. I owned several throughout the '60s. Three were long-time drivers that I wish I could have kept.
One was a Combi wagon that had top damage courtesy of a fallen tree. I removed the damaged portion of the top, up to the front seats and made a light pickup of it. Much better than tossing it away, and it was useful and cute as well.
The second was another Combi, the family workhorse. It ran and ran and ran like the energizer bunny until DuPont's wonderseal antifreeze of about '69 plugged the radiator, overheated the engine and ruined the main bearings. Still I drove it daily (and gently) for several months while building a new engine.
The third was kind of an accidental showpiece, an Isabella TS Coupe. I'd restored it in German Racing Silver and lost an engine. The rings in number four started to break up and my wife disregarded the banging noise and drove it all day. Unable to find a saveable engine, I looked at my Ford Falcon powered hydroplane and started measuring. With minimal rework I could install one in the coupe. I got a Ford Degenham 4-speed and went about setting it up. The result was really interesting. The falcon was actually lighter than the Borgward engine and I didn't have to locate it aft to get balance...and the handling improved. because it was built to 145 hydroplane (stock class) specs this engine was free revving, up to 7200 rpm, and because of increased displacement the car was a real race horse. The only problem I had was that those little brakes weren't up to the job, and I had to keep that in mind. Alltogether the project worked so well that I bought a seven-main 200 cu.in. Mustang!
6 and built it to 150 hydro spe
cs (modified) with triple SU carbs and a better cam and ignition. This one would spin to 9000 rpm. Again, the brakes were no match for the power, and overeagerness could ewasily break differential yokes, but the car was an innocent looking rocket.
I drove these cars for years until the Boeing flop of 70/71 forced me to separate myself from many toys. The coupe went to a buyer from Everett. He wanted the pickup too, but handn't the cash. He did have a '68 VW camper though, which he traded for the pickup *and* the Combi. I haven't seen the cars in years now and I wish I could find the coupe again (WA license DBZ 788 if it's still around). Given the situation again, I probably wouldn't do the engine swap, but at the time there weren't replacement engines, and I just couldn't scrap the coupe.

The body is in pretty good shape, interior in pretty bad shape. we were told that it was in running conditon prior to being parked out in a field probably some 10 years ago. We are very interested in restoring this car to as close to original condition as possible, but have little idea as to where to start. Since these cars are relatively rare in this area, I'm searching for some advise and helpful suggestions. Where do I begin to find such things as the light fixtures, etc. Any assistance or references to other sights would be appreciated.

comment: I just discovered your site - bravo. I am trying to get background on Borgward imports into the US. My father bought one in 1960-ish, an Isabella, Jade Green coupe, from a delaer somehwre in northern NJ. We lived in Rutherford (Bergen Co) at the time. My questions are: how would he have found aout about the Borgward at all? When were they imported? How much might he have paid at the time? How many entered the US? I loved the car (tan interior, with the white band on the front seat), and was especially impressed with the 4-on-the tree. Thanks for helping out.

comment: I finally bought a Goliath!
Now I am beginning restoration, and am looking for parts for my '60 Goliath Hansa 1100 sedan. I need a drivers side mirror, a gearshift knob, hubcaps, chrome moulding around the grill, some parking light lenses that are in better shape than mine, and an extra tail light lens or two. I am also having a little trouble finding a muffler to fit. Any leads from anyone out there would be much appreciated!
My car is Black with a grey and coral red interior. It only has 48,000 original miles, and was saved from the crusher by the previous owner. He put new heads and got the engine back in running order. The car sat in a chicken coop for over twenty years, but has held up quite well. I am the third owner. I really like the styling and design of the Goliath auto, a car very much ahead of its time!
I would like to hear from other Goliath owners, especially those who could spare some parts!

comment: Hi,
I own a 1957 Combi. It has 57,000 miles. It came from the high sierra mountains and is extremely solid. The license plates say it was last registered in 1965. I bought this car off the internet for $400 and have put much work into it. It has a reasonably good paint job, some scratches but is presentable. A few chrome strips and one hub cap is missing. The interior of the car has been completely redone and looks fantastic. She runs very well although, I still have not mastered the shifting. Today, I just received new tailight lenses and brake cylinders. It has some minor electrical problems. I am working on getting an operating manual before I try to tackle this one last problem. I have driven her a total of 120 miles before the brake problems I had new cylinders put in but, the rears began leaking straight away. I ordered NOS ones from Germany. I hope these work better.
I own quite a collection of cars. This one is by far the most obscure. I can't wait to take her to her first show.

Got one for sale, 59 Combi, project car, has been sitting in a barn
in Sacramento California for a very long time, some dents, some rust in
corners of lower rocker panels, otherwise floors and body look ok, body
is complete, interior is also complete but showing its age, carburetor
missing, no idea of mechanical condition, eminently restorable.
Price $2000. Probably high for its condition, but if nobody wants it,
will park it under the trees for another 20 years.

comment: In the 1969 I got a '59 Goliath wagon in trade for some work on a friend's
Studebaker Gran Turismo Hawk. Some time later I was reassigned to Germany
for 6 months, leaving the Goliath in the USA -- I saw only two of them in
all the time I was there, but there were still lots of Borgwards on the roads.
Bank in the US, I managed to blow up the Goliath engine, but found a rebuilt
one that had been sitting under a workshop bench at the local SAAB dealer for
about 5 years, the remains of some project that was never completed. I put
this motor in it (also an 1100). I also bought all the remaining parts that
the former Goliath dealer had, and that wasn't too much. Unfortunately, I
stored the vehicle in a humid garage where it developed a severe case of rust.
5 or 6 years later I sold it and all the parts to a local woman wh had one,
and some time later I heard she sold all to a fellow from Iowa.
In the early 1970s, I bought a 1962 Borgward Hansa Kombi (?) station wagon.
I bought it for $25 from a lanky kid who (I believe) later became a pro
baseball player for Milwaukee and later the Twins (name withheld to protect
the innocent)... he's now retired.
I liked this car's "bulletproof" engineering philosophy but not the plastic
upholstery which didn't fare too well at -20F. I sold it at a healthy profit
to another kid who wanted it more than I did. A year later I'd heard he'd
ruined it...
The guy who gave me the Goliath was soon the owner of a Lloyd, and initially
we didn't realize that the three cars were related -- they didn't seem to
share any parts of design points that we noticed.
Back in the mid '70s I belonged to the Goliath/Borgward/Lloyd club, with a
mailing address in New York (79 Strong Ave, Babylon, Long Island) but with
the disposal of all my G/B/L cars I lost track of them. My automotive
interests focused more on Studebakers (and I still have several) but with
increasing family and age, and decreasing energy, those efforts have waned.
I still have a soft spot for my old Goliath and Borgward, though.

comment: Manufacturer known and appreciated more widely in Europe than in the US. Always found the "Isabella" to be an interesting looking vehicle. Also, had a brief run in, as a kid, with a fellow who had a non-running Lloyd (much later production, though I don't remember the model year) parked next to his garage. That little car has fascinated me to this day. Wish I had had the fifty dollars the owner wanted for it back then. Nobody wanted it, beacause nobody knew what it was. The only parts I ever use to see listed for it was an air filter and an oil filter in the J.C. Whitney catalogue.
